Hi and welcome to the first blog post in the series of Liposuction. Today we shall discuss on who is a good candidate on liposuction.

  6. I am obese – what should I choose – liposuction or bariatric?
  7. I don’t want bariatric surgery, can I undergo liposuction?

I am Dr Ankit Gupta, Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, Director – Panache Aesthetics – Pitampura, New Delhi. As a cosmetic plastic surgeon, I get many queries for liposuction, and I have realised that awareness for this procedure is lacking, not only in general public, but also in people related to medical profession.

I will try to answer a few questions in this series, that I get very frequently in my practice.

  1. What is liposuction?

It is a surgical procedure in which fat – i.e LIPO is removed from your body, using method of suction – hence named – Lipo suction. I shall be dong a full article on what is liposuction and the various types available to patients to choose from.

In short, it helps a plastic surgeon to remove fat lying above your muscles, especially in targeted areas, like belly, flanks, back, thighs, arms and chin etc., and give you a much slimmer body, via very small 5 mm cuts in hidden areas of body hence making it practically scar less.

2. Liposuction vs bariatric surgery.

In Liposuction we remove fat from specific areas, hence it’s a body contouring surgery and not a weight loss surgery. It is especially effective in removing fat from areas which are resistant to fat loss in spite of dieting and exercise.

Bariatiric surgery is a weight loss surgery, in which the organs of the body like stomach or intestines are manipulated in a way that you either cannot eat too much, or don’t absorb food that you eat, hence causing weight loss over a period of few months, following surgery.

3. Exercise and diet vs liposuction

Exercise and proper diet is the best way to lose weight and to live a healthy lifestyle. I personally encourage all my patints for following both regular exercise and proper diet. People feel that liposuction is a way to bypass this difficult route to get in shape, which is not true. As already explained, liposuction is a way to get rid of fat from specific areas of body only.

Eg- you are otherwise in shape except for fat deposits in thighs, which just don’t go despite exercising, or if you have a good shape, but have excessive fat deposits only on flanks or love handles.

In case you exercise but cant get that atheletic body with packs showing- liposuction can help you.

It is not for people with high BMI who wish to lose weight. One needs to understand that liposuction is a body shaping surgery and not weight loss surgery.

4.& 5. Normal weight or slightly overweight

Yes, you are a good candidate for liposuction. Normal weight can even go for high definition liposuction to get the much desired athletic look, like having 6 pack abs. For people who are slightly overweight, it can get you into normal weight and get you in shape, but you too need to keep up with regular exercise and diet.

6. Obese people.

People with high BMI are not the ideal candidates. One should either exercise and diet and reduce fat and then go for lipo for areas not getting reduced or should opt for bariatric surgery.              

7. Don’t want bariatric surgery

Sometimes liposuction is done in this group of patents, which gives them a boost to exercise and they are able to reduce their weight with diet and exercise with time.
